In a bold move to enhance its presence in India, Amazon has announced a staggering investment exceeding $35 billion in the country's cloud and artificial intelligence sectors by the year 2030. This commitment was revealed during the Amazon Smbhav Summit held in New Delhi, and it builds upon the nearly $40 billion the company has already invested in India. The funds will focus on driving AI-led digitization, boosting exports, and creating jobs, all of which align with India's strategic goals to strengthen its local AI ecosystem. Amazon projects that this initiative will generate approximately 1 million new jobs—encompassing direct, indirect, induced, and seasonal opportunities—by 2030. Furthermore, the company aims to enhance exports to $80 billion and extend AI benefits to around 15 million small businesses across the nation. This significant investment underscores Amazon's confidence in India's rapidly growing digital economy, where it has been actively establishing fulfillment centers, data centers, and payment infrastructures. The announcement follows closely on the heels of Microsoft's declaration to invest $17.5 billion into India's AI infrastructure, highlighting the competitive landscape as major tech companies vie for a foothold in this emerging market. Amit Agarwal, Amazon's senior vice president for emerging markets, expressed enthusiasm about the company's role in India's digital evolution over the past 15 years. He stated, "We are humbled to have been a part of India's digital transformation journey. Looking ahead, we're excited to continue being a catalyst for India's growth, as we democratize access to AI for millions of Indians."
