Amazon to spend $12 billion in Louisiana on AI data centers

Amazon has announced a significant investment of $12 billion aimed at establishing new data center campuses in Louisiana, alongside the necessary infrastructure to bolster artificial intelligence and cloud computing capabilities. The planned campuses will be located in the Caddo and Bossier Parishes, situated in the northwestern part of the state. The tech giant anticipates the creation of 540 full-time positions at these data centers, along with approximately 1,700 additional jobs in support roles, which will include electricians, HVAC technicians, and security personnel. Earlier this month, Amazon revealed its intention to allocate $200 billion in capital expenditures for the year, outpacing other major players in the industry, which collectively project nearly $700 billion in expenditures by 2026. Despite these ambitious plans, Wall Street has expressed skepticism towards Amazon's capital expenditure strategy, particularly after the company's shares experienced a decline for nine consecutive days following its earnings report on February 5, resulting in a loss of over $450 billion in market value. A significant portion of Amazon's investments is directed towards AI-related projects, including the establishment of data centers and the development of specialized chips and networking equipment. The race to expand data center operations has intensified among tech companies, with Amazon, Microsoft, and Google each committing hundreds of billions to construct large-scale facilities. In a noteworthy development, Meta has also chosen Louisiana as the location for its extensive Hyperion data center, which is part of a joint venture valued at $27 billion with Blue Owl Capital. However, the rapid expansion of AI data centers has faced resistance from local communities concerned about the potential strain on electricity and water resources, as well as the overall quality of life. Last year, Microsoft abandoned plans for a site in rural Wisconsin after community members voiced environmental and financial concerns. In response to local apprehensions, Amazon has stated that it is collaborating with Southwestern Electric Power Company to cover 100% of the costs associated with the new campus, including investments in upgraded energy infrastructure. The company is also committed to utilizing natural air for cooling the data centers whenever feasible, aiming to minimize electricity consumption. Additionally, Amazon plans to exclusively use surplus water from the local environment to ensure there is no negative impact on regional water supplies, with plans to invest up to $400 million in public water infrastructure to support the initiative. For this project, Amazon is partnering with data center developer Stack Infrastructure.
