Amazon has officially introduced its revamped AI assistant, now branded as Alexa+, to the web through the launch of Alexa.com. This announcement was made during the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where the company revealed that the new website is rolling out to all Alexa+ Early Access users. This move allows customers to engage with Alexa+ online, similar to other AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini. With over 600 million Alexa-enabled devices sold globally, Amazon recognizes the need for its AI assistant to expand its presence beyond home devices and into the realm of smartphones and web platforms. This strategic expansion aims to enable more users to connect with Alexa+, even if they lack a dedicated device at home. In conjunction with this web launch, Amazon is also refreshing its Alexa mobile app to enhance user experience. The app will feature a more chatbot-centric interface on its homepage, shifting the focus towards conversation and interaction, while other functionalities will become secondary. Through the Alexa.com platform, users can leverage Alexa+ for a variety of tasks, ranging from exploring complex topics and generating content to planning travel itineraries. Amazon is positioning its assistant to cater specifically to families, facilitating the management of household tasks such as controlling smart devices, organizing calendars, making dinner reservations, and compiling grocery lists. Moreover, Amazon is integrating several new services into Alexa+, including partnerships with Angi, Expedia, Square, and Yelp, alongside established apps like OpenTable and Uber. The website is designed with a navigation sidebar to streamline access to frequently used features, allowing users to easily continue tasks like adjusting thermostat settings or reviewing shopping lists. A notable aspect of Alexa+ is its potential to act as a central hub for managing personal family data. Amazon is encouraging users to share documents, emails, and calendar entries with Alexa+, enabling it to assist in scheduling and reminders for various family activities. Despite lacking a comprehensive productivity suite like Google’s, Amazon aims to provide a solution for keeping families organized through this integration. Daniel Rausch, VP of Alexa and Echo at Amazon, highlighted that a significant percentage of Alexa+ usage involves unique tasks that other AI platforms cannot perform. For instance, users can share family recipes and receive real-time assistance while cooking. However, he acknowledged that a portion of Alexa+ users are also utilizing features that are common to other AI assistants, indicating a shift in user preferences towards Alexa+. Currently, access to Alexa.com is limited to Early Access customers who log in with their Amazon accounts. Since launching Alexa+ early last year, Amazon has gradually expanded access, now reaching over 10 million users who are reportedly engaging in two to three times more conversations than with the original Alexa. Despite some online complaints regarding performance issues, Rausch asserts that the majority of users are satisfied, with very few opting out of the Alexa+ experience. With 97% of Alexa devices supporting the new Alexa+, Amazon is confident in its ability to enhance the user experience while retaining the functionalities of its original assistant and integrating a vast array of services.
