Amazon Alexa+ released to the general public via an early access website

Amazon has opened the doors for everyone to experience Alexa+, its innovative generative AI assistant, through a complimentary early access program available at Alexa.com. This development liberates the AI from device constraints, allowing it to compete more directly with established chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. Previously, users needed a specific device to interact with Alexa+, but this new initiative marks a significant shift. While Amazon has not disclosed when the early access phase will conclude, it has indicated that Alexa+ will become part of Amazon Prime memberships—available starting at $15 per month—or can be purchased separately for $20 per month. This pricing strategy suggests a clear intention to boost Prime subscriptions by integrating Alexa+ into Amazon's broader shopping ecosystem, which includes e-commerce, grocery delivery, and Whole Foods. With the launch of Alexa.com, Amazon is positioning Alexa+ as a valuable tool for household management, highlighting features designed for trip planning, meal preparation, task lists, calendars, and smart home integration. The company noted that the platform allows users to maintain context and continuity, enabling them to access Alexa across various devices while carrying over previous interactions, preferences, and personalizations. The browser-based version of Alexa was anticipated given its availability at Alexa.Amazon.com, coinciding with Amazon's public discussions about generative AI for Alexa in 2023. This new interaction model, as described by Amazon, offers a robust way to engage with Alexa+, which will also be enhanced by a redesigned mobile app featuring an agent-forward design, ensuring accessibility across multiple environments—whether at a desk, on the move, or at home. Despite the sale of approximately 600 million Alexa-powered devices, Amazon has reported significant losses associated with the Alexa project. By introducing generative AI capabilities and a subscription model, the company hopes to encourage more frequent and complex usage of Alexa+, thus achieving the financial success that has historically eluded the original Alexa. Additionally, there are considerations for integrating advertisements into Alexa+ conversations. However, early feedback indicates that Alexa+ may not yet meet performance expectations, with reports of slower responses and occasional inaccuracies. Some promised features, such as making dinner reservations or ordering takeout, are also reportedly missing as the assistant continues its development prior to the final release.
