Amazon launches new $1 billion FDE org, following OpenAI and Anthropic

In a bold move to assist businesses in harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the establishment of a new internal division dedicated to forward-deployed engineers (FDE). This initiative, launched on Tuesday, aims to embed engineers within client organizations to facilitate the deployment of customized AI solutions, enhancing customer engagement and fostering self-sufficiency. Francessca Vasquez, Vice President of Frontier AI at AWS, outlined the mission of this new organization in a recent announcement. She highlighted that the aim extends beyond merely constructing and upholding requested systems. "Customers leave AWS FDE deployments with both new solutions and new engineering capabilities," the statement noted. This approach not only results in tailored AI systems operating within the clients' AWS environments but also empowers them with enduring skills, workflows, and methodologies for future innovation. Amazon is committing $1 billion to this initiative, which reflects internal resource allocation rather than traditional investment or joint ventures. The FDE model, which gained traction through Palantir, allows for a more hands-on approach to AI deployment. In this scenario, an engineer from AWS will temporarily integrate with the client’s team during system development, enabling them to address challenges and seize opportunities as they arise. This model provides clients with a wealth of expertise while allowing the contractor to retain primary control over the deployment. However, it does require a significant commitment to maintaining a skilled workforce of FDE engineers. In recent months, both OpenAI and Anthropic have launched their own FDE partnerships, valued at $4 billion and $1.5 billion, respectively, each collaborating with private equity firms to secure funding and leverage industry connections.
