Alexa+, Amazon’s AI assistant, is now available to everyone in the U.S.

Amazon has officially launched Alexa+, the enhanced version of its popular AI assistant, making it accessible to all U.S. customers as of Wednesday. This new feature will be offered free of charge to Prime members across various devices, while non-members can access it through the Alexa website or mobile app with certain limitations. Daniel Rausch, Vice President of Alexa and Echo at Amazon, shared insights in an interview with TechCrunch, stating, "We have tens of millions of customers using Alexa+ now, and we’re thrilled to extend this offering to all Prime members. They will enjoy unlimited access, essentially creating a premium experience for our subscribers." First introduced last year, Alexa+ operates on a model-agnostic framework, leveraging Amazon’s foundational models alongside those from other companies. This capability allows Alexa+ to go beyond the basic functions of its predecessor, engaging in more sophisticated tasks and providing a more intuitive user experience. With the ability to hold natural conversations, complete with follow-up questions, Alexa+ is not just about smart home management or providing updates on news and weather. It can assist users in planning trips, managing shared calendars, discovering recipes, making movie recommendations, and even aiding with homework. Furthermore, its integrations with popular services like Ticketmaster, Uber, and OpenTable enable it to perform complex tasks such as booking dinner reservations or hailing rides. Although Amazon has not disclosed specific adoption statistics for the AI's advanced functionalities, Rausch noted that during the year-long beta testing phase, users had the option to revert to the previous version of Alexa. This option will remain available, albeit with no clear timeline for how long. Notably, the number of users opting out has been minimal, indicating general satisfaction with the new features. Amazon has actively collected and implemented user feedback, addressing issues such as excessive interruptions and the AI's voice changes. For instance, the onboarding process has been updated to guide users on how to modify Alexa's voice settings, ensuring that the original voice remains an option. Additionally, improvements have been made to minimize accidental interruptions during conversations. In terms of user engagement, Alexa+ has demonstrated positive trends, with music streaming jumping 25% post-upgrade and a fivefold increase in recipe interactions. Overall, users are conversing with Alexa+ two to three times more than they did with the original version. For U.S. Prime members, Alexa+ will remain free, while non-Prime users can subscribe for $19.99 per month, a fee comparable to other AI services like ChatGPT Plus. Although the free version on the web and mobile will have some restrictions, Rausch assures that these are designed to prevent misuse. Alexa+ will be available across a range of devices, including Echo products, Fire TV, and various partner devices, with plans for further expansion.
