Amazon agrees to make canceling Prime easy, will refund customers $1.5B

In a significant development, Amazon has agreed to resolve a lawsuit initiated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which accused the retail giant of misleading customers into signing up for its Prime service and then complicating the cancellation process. According to a press release issued by the FTC on Thursday, pending judicial approval, Amazon will face a civil penalty of $1 billion and will refund $1.5 billion to approximately 35 million consumers impacted by its deceptive enrollment tactics. This civil penalty marks a record, being the largest ever imposed in relation to an FTC rule violation, while the refunds represent the second-largest restitution awarded through FTC enforcement actions. As part of the settlement, Amazon has committed to revising its practices around Prime memberships. The company will eliminate illegal methods of enrolling and canceling Prime subscriptions, ensuring that customers can unsubscribe with ease. The FTC highlighted that Amazon must implement a clearly visible option for users to decline Prime, replacing misleading buttons that previously deterred cancellations. Additionally, Amazon is required to provide transparent information regarding automatic renewals and the cancellation process, including a straightforward way for customers to cancel using the same method they used to enroll. This move aims to enhance consumer protection and restore trust, making it easier for Amazon customers to manage their subscriptions.
