Amazon won’t release Fire Sticks that support sideloading anymore

Amazon has officially confirmed a significant shift in its Fire TV Stick lineup, opting to discontinue support for sideloading Android applications. The latest models, starting with the Fire TV Stick 4K Select launched in October, will exclusively operate on Amazon's proprietary Vega operating system. This change was highlighted in an update on Amazon's developer website, stating that all future Fire TV Sticks would utilize the Vega OS. Interestingly, historical archives reveal that this announcement has been present since at least January, though it has not been explicitly communicated to consumers until now. Many users are just becoming aware of Amazon's decision to restrict app installations to those available in the Amazon Appstore. According to the guidelines for apps on Vega-powered devices, any application must be published in the Amazon Appstore to be eligible for installation. For enhanced security, the new Fire TV Stick HD, which was announced recently, includes a notice indicating that it prevents sideloading or the installation of apps from unverified sources. This means users will only be able to download applications directly from the Amazon Appstore. While sideloading is still technically possible, it is limited to registered developers. Notably, the Echo Show 5 was the first Amazon device to launch with the Vega OS, followed by the Echo Hub released in April 2024. The transition to Vega culminated in October with the introduction of the Fire TV 4K Select, marking the beginning of a new era for Amazon's streaming devices.
