Amazon bets Nobel Prize-based dehumidification can cut its energy use

As temperatures rise during the summer months, many establishments like restaurants, malls, and offices often feel cooler than necessary. This is largely due to the dual role of air conditioning systems, which not only cool the air but also dehumidify it. In regions with high humidity, such as the southern United States, the need for effective dehumidification is critical to prevent mold growth. Sorin Grama, CEO and co-founder of Transaera, explained that the intense cooling often seen in commercial spaces is primarily aimed at reducing humidity levels. "In some cases, the air is so cold that it requires reheating," he noted. In response to this challenge, Transaera has innovated a cutting-edge ventilation unit designed to vastly improve energy efficiency in dehumidification, ultimately saving both energy and costs for users. After several months of testing in Houston, Amazon has recently committed to purchasing these advanced units. The retail giant's decision reflects a growing interest from various companies, with Transaera now targeting significant sales figures in the nine-figure range. For Amazon, this procurement secures capacity over the next three years. Grama highlighted that Amazon views this as a design solution, intending to integrate it into their building standards for replication. The new system, referred to as a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS), aims to maintain fresh air circulation in commercial buildings while reducing the burden on traditional air conditioning units. Capable of extracting up to 100 pounds of water from the air each hour, the DOAS allows air conditioning systems to operate more efficiently. While the concept of a DOAS isn't new, Transaera claims its model can outperform existing systems by being twice as effective in moisture removal. The key innovation lies in a proprietary desiccant that coats a six-foot wheel, which rotates within the unit. Grama likened it to "silica gel on steroids," although he refrained from revealing the specific composition of the desiccant, noting it is based on Nobel Prize-winning materials from 2025. As air enters the system, the desiccant absorbs moisture, which is then processed through a heat exchanger before being circulated back into the building. Stale air is expelled, carrying heat away from the system, which recharges the desiccant for further moisture extraction. Amazon has expressed confidence that Transaera’s DOAS units will significantly assist in reducing its energy consumption and contribute to its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Transaera is collaborating with established manufacturers in the U.S. to produce the device, ensuring that its innovative desiccant can be integrated into standard commercial HVAC systems. "It’s an easy replacement for outdated units," Grama explained, emphasizing the demand for this efficient solution.
