In a significant move to bolster its satellite internet ambitions, Amazon successfully launched a batch of satellites for its Project Kuiper network aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Florida’s Space Coast. The launch, which occurred at 2:30 a.m. EST on Wednesday, represents a crucial step for Amazon as it seeks to challenge SpaceX's well-established Starlink broadband service. The Falcon 9 rocket, operated by SpaceX, ascended over the Atlantic Ocean, executing a trajectory that allowed it to position the satellites into the Kuiper constellation at an inclination of 51.9 degrees to the equator. Approximately one hour after liftoff, the rocket's upper stage deployed 24 Kuiper satellites at an altitude of around 289 miles (465 kilometers). These satellites are designed to utilize onboard electric propulsion systems to ascend to their operational altitude of 391 miles (630 kilometers). With this latest launch, Amazon has now successfully placed 78 Kuiper satellites in orbit, marking a significant milestone in its ambitious plan to establish a constellation of 3,232 satellites aimed at providing broadband internet access to much of the world's population. The Project Kuiper initiative is a costly endeavor, with industry analysts from Quilty Space estimating that it could range between $16.5 billion and $20 billion. Notably, Quilty has indicated that Amazon is expected to spend around $10 billion solely on launch costs, surpassing initial projections for the entire project. To realize its satellite ambitions, Amazon has secured over 80 launches to deploy the Kuiper constellation. Interestingly, while the company initially opted for services from United Launch Alliance, Arianespace, and Blue Origin, it eventually turned to SpaceX for some of its launch needs. In 2022, Amazon booked 68 flights with these providers, relying on ULA's Atlas V to support the early phases of the Kuiper missions due to the unavailability of ULA's Vulcan rocket, Arianespace's Ariane 6, and Blue Origin's New Glenn at that time.
