Amazon hopes to challenge Nvidia more directly by selling its AI chips

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is gearing up to make significant inroads into the AI chip market, challenging Nvidia's long-standing dominance in the sector. Peter DeSantis, the AI chief at Amazon, revealed to Bloomberg that the company is exploring the possibility of selling its proprietary AI chip, Trainium, to other firms for use in their data centers. While DeSantis did not disclose specific potential buyers, he emphasized that these discussions are in their infancy. This initiative stems from a statement made by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in his recent shareholder letter, where he noted the high demand for their custom-built AI chips and hinted at potential sales to third parties. Jassy projected that if the chip business operated independently, it could generate an annual revenue of approximately $50 billion—a figure that rivals the annual revenues of major players like Intel. However, the challenge to Nvidia may not be as straightforward as it seems. Nvidia currently boasts a revenue run rate of $326 billion, and while a $50 billion competitor would certainly be noteworthy, it may not significantly disrupt Nvidia's operations, especially if the latter continues to perform well. AWS has traditionally refrained from selling its AI chips for a variety of reasons, including the complex revenue model that benefits from a multitude of services beyond chip sales, such as storage and networking solutions. Moreover, the capacity for Amazon's Trainium chips has reportedly been selling out rapidly. Jassy highlighted in April that the availability of Trainium was exhausted almost immediately, as was the next generation, Trainium4, which is still over a year away from launch. This situation complicates any plans to sell chips to external customers, as it could lead to delays for existing clients unless AWS can significantly ramp up production through partnerships with manufacturers like TSMC. AWS spokesperson Doron Aronson confirmed the company’s openness to possibly selling these chips in the future, a notable shift from their historical reluctance to do so. With Nvidia's founder recently announcing a new $200 billion market for CPUs in AI, Amazon's intent to carve out its own $50 billion chip market could signify a new era of competition in the tech landscape.
