Amazon has announced a significant change in its grocery strategy by deciding to shut down all 19 Fresh supermarket locations across the United Kingdom. This decision comes after a comprehensive assessment of its business operations and in light of the considerable growth potential in online grocery delivery. The company revealed in a recent blog post that five of the Fresh sites will be transitioned into Whole Foods stores, indicating a strategic pivot within its grocery offerings. Amazon first introduced its Fresh concept outside the United States in London back in 2021, following its initial launch in Los Angeles a year earlier. These Fresh supermarkets were designed to provide customers with lower prices and a wider selection of mainstream products compared to Whole Foods, which Amazon purchased for $13.7 billion in 2017. Many Fresh locations also incorporated Amazon's innovative cashierless “Just Walk Out” technology, enhancing the shopping experience. However, the closure of these stores reflects a broader reevaluation of Amazon's grocery ambitions, as the company has been slowing the expansion of both its Fresh and Go cashierless stores in the U.S. Despite these closures, Amazon still operates 500 Whole Foods locations and has recently opened smaller “daily shop” versions of Whole Foods in New York City. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has expressed optimism about the grocery sector, highlighting the success of online sales of everyday essentials like canned goods and household items. At the company's annual shareholder meeting in May, Jassy reaffirmed his confidence in the grocery business, calling it a vital area for Amazon's growth. In addition to these changes, Amazon is set to introduce same-day grocery delivery, including perishables, in the UK starting next year, further emphasizing its commitment to enhancing its online grocery services.
