Amazon reaches $2.5 billion settlement with FTC over 'deceptive' Prime program

In a significant development, Amazon has agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement in response to allegations from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that it misled customers into enrolling in its Prime membership program. This unexpected resolution emerged just days into the trial in a Seattle federal court, where the FTC had opened its case against the retail giant. The lawsuit, initiated by the FTC in June 2023 during the Biden administration, accused Amazon of deceiving millions of consumers into subscribing to Prime and obstructing their efforts to cancel the service. If the jury had ruled in favor of the FTC, three high-ranking Amazon executives could have faced personal liability. Under the terms of the settlement, Amazon is required to avoid any misrepresentation of Prime's terms. The agreement mandates that the company provides clear and conspicuous information regarding the program's conditions during the sign-up process. Additionally, Amazon must obtain explicit consent from users before charging them for the subscription and ensure that cancelling the service is a straightforward process. Key figures in this settlement include Amazon's Prime leader, Jamil Ghani, and Neil Lindsay, a senior VP previously involved in the Prime division. The settlement prohibits them from engaging in unlawful practices in the future. Since its inception in 2005, Amazon Prime has become a leading subscription service worldwide, boasting over 200 million members and generating substantial revenue for the company. The membership, priced at $139 annually, offers benefits such as free shipping and access to a vast array of streaming content. Research indicates that Prime subscribers tend to spend more money and shop more frequently compared to non-members. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
