Amazon to announce largest layoffs in company history, source says

Amazon is reportedly on the verge of announcing significant job reductions, marking a historic moment for the tech giant. According to sources familiar with the situation, the layoffs, which are set to begin on Tuesday, will impact nearly every sector of the company's corporate workforce. The anticipated cuts could see as many as 30,000 employees let go, making it the largest reduction in Amazon's history. Employees are expected to receive notifications via email starting Tuesday morning. This news was initially reported by Reuters, and while Amazon has chosen not to comment publicly, the scale of the layoffs is unprecedented for the company. Since 2022, Amazon has been gradually reducing its workforce, with over 27,000 employees already affected by various rounds of layoffs. This year has seen continued job cuts, albeit on a smaller scale. Areas such as cloud services, retail operations, and device manufacturing have already experienced job losses in recent months. These layoffs are part of a broader initiative led by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy to streamline operations and reduce costs, a strategy that was initiated during the Covid-19 pandemic. Jassy has emphasized the need to simplify the corporate hierarchy by reducing management levels to create a more efficient organization. In a memo to employees in June, Jassy hinted at further workforce reductions, particularly as the company integrates generative AI technologies. He noted that this shift could lead to a decreased need for certain roles, while also highlighting the potential for new job opportunities in other areas. "It's challenging to predict the exact long-term impacts, but we anticipate a reduction in our corporate workforce in the coming years," Jassy wrote. As Amazon prepares for these significant changes, the company's future workforce structure remains a topic of keen interest and speculation.
