Amazon to resume drone delivery following crash in Arizona

Amazon is set to restart its drone delivery operations in Arizona this Friday, following a temporary suspension due to a recent crash. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, involved two of the company’s Prime Air delivery drones colliding with a crane's boom near Tolleson, Arizona, where Amazon's same-day delivery service is based. The company had halted its drone operations in the West Valley of the Phoenix Metro area—its sole commercial market—after the collision on Wednesday. Amazon has been actively delivering packages weighing up to five pounds via its drone service since November 2024. Terrence Clark, an Amazon spokesperson, mentioned that the company is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigations led by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration. "Safety is our top priority, and we’ve completed our own internal review of this incident and are confident that there wasn’t an issue with the drones or the technology that supports them," he stated in an email. To enhance safety measures, Amazon has implemented additional protocols, including improved visual inspections of the surrounding landscape to identify potential moving obstructions like cranes. Despite facing challenges in the past, including the departure of key personnel and a previous mid-air collision in Oregon, Amazon is determined to achieve its ambitious goal of delivering 500 million packages annually by the end of the decade. Notably, Amazon has made strides in its drone operations, having secured approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration earlier this year to operate its delivery drones over longer distances. This regulatory green light is a significant step towards expanding its Prime Air service, with plans to extend operations to various locations across Texas and beyond, including cities like Detroit and Kansas City.
