Amazon reorganizes health-care business in latest bid to crack multitrillion-dollar market

Amazon's ongoing journey into the U.S. health-care market is set for a significant transformation as the company announces a major restructuring of its health services division. After years of extensive investments, acquisitions, and notable leadership changes, Amazon Health Services will now be divided into six distinct units. This reorganization aims to streamline operations and enhance the overall patient experience, as confirmed by the company in a recent statement to CNBC. Neil Lindsay, the senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, revealed that the company has been planning this overhaul for several months. In a video interview, he emphasized the need for a simplified structure to foster innovation and agility within the organization. "One of the challenges we're addressing is the fragmented experience that patients often face in healthcare," Lindsay stated, highlighting the company's commitment to enhancing customer care. Despite the restructuring, Amazon has clarified that it will not be conducting widespread layoffs. This announcement follows the recent exit of several high-profile health leaders, including Dr. Vin Gupta, Trent Green, and Dr. Sunita Mishra. While Amazon will not appoint a new CEO for One Medical following Green's departure, the company is focused on maintaining continuity during this transition period. For years, Amazon has been dedicated to penetrating the multitrillion-dollar U.S. healthcare sector, which is known for its complexities and inefficiencies. The company's initial foray into this space began with the acquisition of online pharmacy PillPack in 2018 and the subsequent launch of Amazon Pharmacy in 2020. Its acquisition of One Medical for $3.9 billion in 2023 marked a significant milestone, granting Amazon access to a network of physical primary care clinics. However, Amazon's journey has not been without setbacks. The company discontinued its telehealth service, Amazon Care, in 2022 and dissolved Haven, its joint healthcare initiative with Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase. Despite these challenges, Amazon continues to face fierce competition, especially in primary care, where profit margins are slim. Notably, former PillPack leaders have launched a competing health-care marketplace called General Medicine. Lindsay described the recent departures as part of the natural evolution of Amazon's health business, asserting that the organization possesses a wealth of talent ready to embrace new challenges. With the new structure in place, Amazon Health Services will focus on six key groups, or "pillars," designed to drive growth in its health offerings. Although specific financial figures for the health division have not been disclosed, Lindsay reported that the business is experiencing robust growth. Since its acquisition by Amazon, One Medical has actively expanded its operations, opening new offices in multiple states. The pharmacy division has also seen impressive growth, reportedly doubling its customer base over the past year. As Amazon continues to roll out new pharmacies across the country, the company aims to simplify healthcare access for millions of Americans. "If we can make one thing a little bit easier for a lot of people, we'll save them a lot of time, a lot of money, and some lives," Lindsay concluded, expressing optimism for the future of Amazon's health services.
