‘Project Hail Mary’ becomes Amazon MGM’s biggest box office hit

Amazon MGM's ambitious gamble on 'Project Hail Mary' has proven to be a resounding success, as the film recently eclipsed 'Creed III' to become the studio's highest-grossing movie to date. With a substantial production budget of approximately $200 million, this investment is particularly noteworthy given that it is neither a sequel nor part of an established franchise. Instead, the film draws its inspiration from the acclaimed science fiction novel by Andy Weir, the same author behind the hit adaptation of 'The Martian' a decade ago. What sets 'Project Hail Mary' apart from typical blockbusters is its unconventional narrative structure. For significant portions of the film, Ryan Gosling stands as the sole human actor, portraying a scientist who collaborates with a rock-like alien to unravel the mystery of why several stars, including our own Sun, are dimming. After just ten days in theaters, the film has grossed an estimated $164.3 million in North America, along with an impressive $136.2 million internationally, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Domestically, the film experienced only a 32% decline in its second weekend, bringing in $54.5 million, suggesting that its total box office revenue could climb even higher once it concludes its theatrical run. Currently, 'Project Hail Mary' stands as the biggest hit of 2026 so far and ranks among the most successful non-franchise, non-sequel films in recent years. This success is particularly encouraging for Amazon MGM Studios, which has shifted its focus over the years. Initially known for distributing smaller, critically acclaimed films like 'The Big Sick' and 'Manchester by the Sea,' the studio recently acquired MGM, leading to significant projects including the coveted James Bond franchise. Following a series of underwhelming releases such as 'After the Hunt' and the controversial 'Melania' documentary, 'Project Hail Mary' has revitalized Amazon's cinematic aspirations. Courtenay Valenti, Amazon's head of film, expressed to The New York Times that the film's impressive opening weekend has validated their strategy of producing 'big, bold entertaining commercial films.' Looking ahead, audiences can anticipate more theatrical releases, including 'The Sheep Detectives' starring Hugh Jackman in May and a 'Masters of the Universe' reboot in June.
