Amazon has announced the establishment of a new team dedicated to agentic artificial intelligence within its consumer product development sector, as revealed on Wednesday. This innovative group will operate out of Lab126, the discreet Silicon Valley-based research and development hub responsible for creating popular devices like the Kindle and Echo smart speaker. As the demand for more sophisticated AI solutions grows, numerous companies are venturing into the realm of AI agents, which are designed to perform complex, multi-step actions on behalf of users, unlike standard AI services such as chatbots. The newly formed team will focus on developing an agentic AI framework tailored for Amazon's robotics initiatives, commonly referred to as 'physical AI.' These advanced systems empower robots to comprehend and respond to natural language commands, effectively transforming warehouse robots into versatile, capable assistants. Earlier this year, Amazon's AI lab introduced a web browser-based agent, and its cloud division has also initiated its own agentic AI group. Additionally, the recent release of Amazon's Alexa+—an enhanced version of its voice assistant—will incorporate some of these agentic features, further expanding the company's AI capabilities.
