On Wednesday, Amazon revealed its plans to create AI-driven smart glasses tailored for its delivery personnel. The innovative design aims to offer a hands-free experience, minimizing the distractions of shifting focus between a smartphone, delivery packages, and the surrounding environment. These smart glasses are set to empower delivery drivers to scan packages, receive turn-by-turn directions, and document proof of delivery—all without needing to handle their phones. By leveraging AI sensing capabilities and advanced computer vision, the glasses will present crucial information, such as potential hazards and delivery tasks, directly in the wearer’s line of sight. Amazon anticipates that this technology will streamline the delivery process, enabling drivers to save time by providing them with immediate navigation and awareness of their surroundings. The glasses are designed to automatically activate when a driver arrives at a delivery location, assisting them in locating packages within their vehicle and guiding them to the correct address. They are particularly beneficial in complex environments like multi-unit apartments and commercial properties. Complementing the glasses is a controller that delivery drivers wear on their vests, which features operational controls, a replaceable battery, and a dedicated emergency button. Notably, the glasses are compatible with prescription lenses and can adjust to varying light conditions. Currently, Amazon is testing these smart glasses with delivery drivers across North America, with plans to enhance the technology before a broader launch. This announcement follows a report from Reuters last year indicating that Amazon had been developing this concept. In addition to the smart glasses, Amazon also introduced a new robotic arm named “Blue Jay,” designed to assist warehouse staff in picking and sorting items. Moreover, the tech giant unveiled an AI tool called Eluna, aimed at delivering operational insights for its warehouses.
