In a significant move to enhance consumer trust, Amazon has pledged to intensify its efforts against fake reviews following a new agreement with the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). This initiative comes in response to a CMA investigation that began in 2021, aimed at assessing whether major online platforms, including Amazon and Google, were adequately safeguarding consumers from misleading product ratings. The investigation was triggered by a surge in online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic, which revealed extensive manipulation of product reviews. As part of the agreement, Amazon is committed to improving its systems designed to identify and eliminate fake reviews. This includes addressing a troubling issue known as "catalogue abuse," where sellers exploit positive reviews intended for one product to enhance the reputation of a completely different item. A typical example highlighted by the CMA illustrates this tactic: consumers might encounter a set of headphones boasting a five-star rating, only to find that the reviews actually pertain to a mobile phone charger. Amazon is now poised to take firmer action against those who engage in such misleading practices, which could result in businesses being banned from its platform and users who repeatedly post false reviews facing prohibitions. CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell underscored the importance of authentic reviews, stating, "Millions of people shop on Amazon, and star ratings and reviews are critical in their purchasing decisions. These commitments will enable shoppers to have greater confidence that the reviews they see are genuine, and that those attempting to deceive them will face serious repercussions." This agreement builds upon a similar commitment secured from Google earlier this year, as part of the CMA's broader initiative to ensure online platforms uphold greater responsibility for consumer protection. In its statement, Amazon reiterated its "zero tolerance" policy regarding fake reviews, highlighting ongoing investments in resources to combat such fraudulent activities. The company noted, "We deploy significant resources to prevent fake reviews from infiltrating our marketplace, utilizing expert investigators and machine learning tools that analyze thousands of data points to identify suspicious behavior." These new commitments are specifically tailored for Amazon's UK website and aim to better align the company with British consumer protection regulations.
