
Amazon has announced a significant advancement in its plans to launch the Leo internet-from-space service, revealing that it now has enough satellites in orbit for an initial rollout later this year. The company successfully deployed 29 satellites aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket early Thursday morning, bringing its total satellite count to over 390. This milestone is crucial as Amazon aims to position Leo as a competitor to SpaceX's Starlink in the burgeoning low Earth orbit satellite market. Chris Weber, Amazon Leo's vice president of business and product, shared the news on social media, highlighting that the current satellite constellation is sufficient to provide continuous service across the initial operational latitudes. Although Amazon began offering an 'enterprise preview' of Leo to select businesses last November, the company has yet to unveil its services for general consumers and government clients. The initial commercial offerings will likely be limited to specific geographic regions, with plans for future missions to expand coverage and capacity. In comparison, SpaceX has a four-year head start, having launched Starlink in 2015, and currently boasts around 10,000 satellites along with over 10 million subscribers. Amazon's venture into satellite internet began in 2019 under the name Project Kuiper, which was later rebranded to Leo. The company plans to deploy a total of approximately 7,700 satellites, but has faced challenges due to limitations in rocket availability. In January, Amazon requested an extension on its regulatory deployment deadlines, citing delays that were outside of its control, particularly a shortage of rockets. In 2022, Amazon secured a significant agreement for rocket launches with ULA, Arianespace, and Blue Origin, owned by Jeff Bezos, and also arranged rides with SpaceX. However, many of these launch providers have encountered delays. A notable setback occurred in May when a Blue Origin New Glenn rocket exploded during pre-launch tests, just days before it was scheduled to deploy more Amazon satellites. The company is currently reconstructing the launchpad and investigating the cause of the explosion. Despite these challenges, Bezos and Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp are committed to returning the New Glenn rocket to service by the end of this year. This large, partially reusable rocket is designed to rival SpaceX's Starship and can carry heavy payloads of up to 45 metric tons into low Earth orbit. Looking ahead, Amazon has stated that its next Leo mission will utilize ULA's Vulcan heavy-lift rocket, which is expected to enable the transportation of even larger payloads and accelerate the deployment rate. Melissa Wuerl, Leo's director of launch systems, expressed optimism, saying, "With hundreds of flight-ready satellites prepared at the Cape and a new, dedicated vertical integration facility established for the Vulcan missions, we are well-positioned to enhance our launch cadence and expand network coverage following our initial service launch later this year."
