Amazon launches same-day delivery of meat, eggs, produce in more than 1,000 cities

Amazon is significantly enhancing its grocery delivery services by introducing same-day delivery of fresh food to more than 1,000 cities across the United States. This initiative aims to encourage online shoppers to include items like meat and eggs in their orders while navigating Amazon's extensive digital marketplace. The tech giant made the announcement on Wednesday, revealing that locations such as Raleigh, North Carolina; Tampa, Florida; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will soon benefit from this service. Amazon plans to expand its reach to at least 2,300 cities and towns by the end of the year. The same-day delivery service began as a trial in select cities last year, where Amazon found that customers frequently added perishable items like strawberries, bananas, and avocados to their orders. According to the company, many of these customers were new to Amazon grocery shopping, returning to make purchases twice as often when same-day delivery was available. For Amazon Prime members, this service is complimentary on orders exceeding $25 in most cities. If the order falls short of that threshold, a fee of $2.99 applies. Non-Prime customers can access the same delivery service for a flat fee of $12.99, irrespective of the order size. In recent years, Amazon has been revamping its grocery sector, making adjustments to its Fresh grocery stores to attract a larger customer base. The company has also opened fresh food delivery options to non-Prime members and has focused on boosting sales of essential household items like paper towels and cleaning supplies. In a strategic move earlier this year, Amazon appointed Jason Buechel, the CEO of Whole Foods Market, which it acquired in 2017, to oversee its global grocery operations. Buechel announced plans in June to integrate Whole Foods more closely with Amazon's grocery framework, marking a shift from its previous operational independence.
