Amazon acquires Bee, the AI wearable that records everything you say

Amazon has made headlines by acquiring Bee, a startup known for its innovative AI wearables, as revealed in a LinkedIn update from co-founder Maria de Loudres Zollo. The tech giant has confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch, although the deal remains pending finalization. Bee, which successfully raised $7 million last year, offers a unique wearable device similar to a Fitbit, priced at $49.99 with an additional subscription fee of $19 per month. This device is designed to record everything it hears, allowing users to capture conversations for reminder and to-do list creation, unless the user opts to mute it. Zollo previously expressed ambitions for the company to create what she calls a “cloud phone,” envisioning a personal device that mirrors a user's smartphone while granting access to accounts and notifications. This would enable users to receive reminders about events and send messages seamlessly. On its website, Bee articulates its vision: "We believe everyone should have access to a personal, ambient intelligence that feels less like a tool and more like a trusted companion. One that helps you reflect, remember, and navigate the world freely." While other firms like Rabbit and Humane AI have ventured into AI-enabled wearables, they have not achieved significant success. Bee's pricing strategy positions its devices as more affordable options for consumers hesitant to invest heavily in wearable technology, especially compared to the $499 Humane AI Pin. An Amazon representative confirmed that employees from Bee have been offered positions at Amazon, marking a strategic move for the company as it explores the wearable AI market, diverging from its established voice-activated home assistants like the Echo line. Meanwhile, competitors like OpenAI are developing their own AI hardware, and Meta is incorporating AI into smart glasses, with Apple reportedly working on similar innovations. These AI-powered products raise important concerns regarding security and privacy, particularly given their recording capabilities. Policies on handling voice recordings vary among companies, impacting how data is processed, stored, and utilized for AI development. Currently, Bee's privacy policy allows users to delete their data at any time, stating that audio recordings are not retained or used for AI training, although the app does keep data on user interactions to enhance its functionality. Moreover, Bee has indicated intentions to implement features that allow users to set boundaries regarding topics and locations to automatically pause the device’s listening capabilities. While the company aims to enhance user privacy through on-device AI processing, concerns remain about potential changes to these policies under Amazon's ownership, especially given Amazon's past controversies involving user data management. Notably, Amazon has previously faced scrutiny for sharing footage from Ring security cameras without user consent or a warrant, and it settled claims related to unauthorized access to customer videos by employees and contractors in 2023.
