Amazon has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative that will allow patients to collect their prescriptions directly from vending machines at its One Medical clinics. This new service, launched on Wednesday, is designed to streamline the process of obtaining medications immediately following doctor appointments. Starting in December, these Amazon Pharmacy kiosks will be rolled out in One Medical locations across Los Angeles, with plans for further expansion in the near future. After a healthcare provider issues a prescription, patients can opt for in-office pickup through the kiosk. To complete the process, they simply use their smartphones to check out via the Amazon app, with medications typically becoming available within minutes. The kiosks are stocked with a variety of commonly prescribed medications, such as antibiotics, inhalers, and blood pressure drugs. Notably, each kiosk's inventory is tailored to reflect the prescribing habits of the specific medical office. However, it is important to note that controlled substances and medications requiring refrigeration are not available through this service. Patients will have the convenience of viewing upfront costs, including potential discounts and estimated insurance copays, directly in the Amazon app. Additionally, they can connect with a licensed pharmacist through video or phone consultations if they have any questions. Hannah McClellan, Amazon Pharmacy’s vice president of operations, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "We know that when patients have to make an extra trip to the pharmacy after seeing their doctor, many prescriptions never get filled." The introduction of these kiosks comes at a challenging time for traditional pharmacy chains, with Rite Aid shuttering all its remaining stores, CVS closing over 1,000 locations since 2021, and Walgreens shutting down 500 stores in the past year. Amazon's innovative vending machines could significantly impact the traditional pharmacy landscape. This move is part of Amazon's broader strategy to enhance its footprint in the healthcare industry. The company made a significant entry into this sector in 2018 with the acquisition of online pharmacy PillPack for $750 million, followed by the launch of Amazon Pharmacy in 2020. Just two years later, Amazon expanded further by acquiring primary care provider One Medical.
