Amazon to buy AI company Bee that makes wearable listening device

Amazon is set to acquire the innovative wearables startup Bee AI, a San Francisco-based company known for its unique wristband that integrates artificial intelligence technology. Priced at $49.99, this device resembles a Fitbit smartwatch and is designed to listen to conversations, providing users with summaries, to-do lists, and reminders to streamline their daily tasks. The announcement was made by Bee AI's CEO, Maria de Lourdes Zollo, in a LinkedIn post, where she expressed excitement about the company's new chapter with Amazon. "When we started Bee, we envisioned a world where AI is deeply personal, enhancing your life by learning alongside you," Zollo stated. "Our dream has evolved into reality, and we are thrilled to find a new home at Amazon." An Amazon spokesperson, Alexandra Miller, confirmed the acquisition plans but did not disclose specific details regarding the financial terms of the deal. This move is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to intensify its focus on generative artificial intelligence, following the launch of various AI products, including its Nova models, Trainium chips, and a marketplace for third-party AI models known as Bedrock. In addition to revamping its Alexa voice assistant with enhanced AI capabilities, Amazon's smart home security unit, Ring, is also exploring the integration of generative AI into its offerings. Although Amazon previously ventured into the wearable tech space with the health-oriented Halo product, it discontinued the device in 2023 as part of cost-cutting measures. As the tech landscape evolves, other companies are also experimenting with AI-driven consumer hardware, with varying degrees of success. Notable examples include the Rabbit R1, a gadget priced at $199 that utilizes an OpenAI model for inquiries, and the AI pin from Humane, which was later acquired by HP. Additionally, Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses have gained traction since their initial release in 2021. In a significant move, OpenAI also acquired Jony Ive's AI device startup io for approximately $6.4 billion, with plans for a screen-free device on the horizon.
