Amazon is making significant strides into the rapidly growing weight loss sector by launching a new program designed to enhance access to widely-used GLP-1 treatments. Announced on Tuesday, the initiative comes from Amazon's healthcare branch, One Medical, and aims to seamlessly incorporate obesity management into standard healthcare routines. This innovative program offers a blend of virtual consultations and in-person appointments, alongside comprehensive prescription management and pharmacy services. The focus is on treating weight management as a long-term health issue, rather than a temporary fix. Tanvi Patel, vice president and general manager of Amazon Pharmacy, emphasized the company's commitment to providing swift and straightforward access to medications, stating, "Transforming the pharmacy experience is central to our mission." Through Amazon Pharmacy, patients will have access to popular medications such as Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and new oral GLP-1 alternatives. For those with insurance, monthly costs can begin at just $25, while cash-paying customers can expect oral medications to start at $149 monthly. Injectable treatments, like Wegovy shots and Eli Lilly's Zepbound, are available from $299 per month without insurance, reflecting competitive pricing within the current market. What sets Amazon apart is its promise of same-day delivery, leveraging its extensive logistics capabilities to provide enhanced convenience in the healthcare landscape. Additionally, the program will include on-demand prescription renewals, with costs starting at $29 for messaging consultations and $49 for video consultations. Looking ahead, Amazon plans to broaden its same-day delivery service to 4,500 cities by the end of 2026. Following the announcement, stock prices for several companies involved in the obesity treatment market, including Hims & Hers Health and Amgen, saw declines, indicating the potential impact of Amazon's new venture on the competitive landscape.
