Amazon limits on Claude Code frustrate employees, including some who have to sell it to cloud customers

The internal messaging reveals that employees have rallied for the formal adoption of Claude Code, with approximately 1,500 endorsing its use in discussions. This situation has raised eyebrows, particularly among engineers involved in selling AWS Bedrock, Amazon's platform that provides access to third-party AI services, including Claude Code. Questions have arisen regarding how they can effectively advocate for a product they are barred from using in official capacities. One employee highlighted concerns about customer trust, questioning the credibility of promoting a tool that isn’t approved for internal use. This dilemma underscores the complicated dynamics of Amazon's relationship with Anthropic. While the tech giant is actively developing and marketing its own AI tools, it simultaneously supports a competing technology from its partner. With a stake in Anthropic exceeding $60 billion, Amazon is also a major provider of cloud services to the startup, which relies on Amazon's infrastructure and chips. An Amazon representative emphasized the advantages of Kiro, claiming improvements in efficiency and customer growth. They stated that, while existing tools are supported, the company does not plan to endorse additional third-party AI development tools. The irony of being asked to promote Claude Code without formal support has not gone unnoticed by Amazon employees. Some engineers argue that the focus on Kiro could hinder productivity, with claims that Claude Code outperforms Amazon's tool. Concerns have been raised that enforcing the use of a less effective product might stifle innovation and development speed. Claude Code has emerged as a leading AI coding service, shaping many similar products in the industry. According to Amazon, about 70% of software engineers engaged with Kiro in January. However, sentiments in internal forums indicate a growing desire for the company to officially recognize and adopt Claude Code. Employees have expressed frustration over a lack of transparency regarding decisions surrounding the tool's approval, particularly after indications that it had passed necessary security and legal reviews were later retracted.
