Anthropic gets $5B investment from Amazon, will use it to buy Amazon chips

In a bold move to strengthen its partnership with AI developer Anthropic, Amazon has announced an injection of $5 billion into the company. This substantial funding is set to enable Anthropic to acquire up to 5 gigawatts of AI chips from Amazon, essential for training and optimizing its widely used Claude AI models. With this latest investment, Amazon's total financial commitment to Anthropic reaches an impressive $13 billion, following an earlier investment of $8 billion. Furthermore, reports indicate that the partnership may see an additional $20 billion investment from Amazon in the future, contingent on meeting specific commercial targets. This influx of capital arrives at a pivotal moment for Anthropic, coinciding with a significant increase in paid subscriptions for its Claude services earlier this year. This surge in demand has put considerable pressure on Anthropic's existing cloud infrastructure, leading to performance issues and even outages for many users. Acknowledging these challenges, Anthropic noted in an announcement regarding the investment, "The rapid growth we are experiencing is straining our infrastructure; our unprecedented consumer growth has particularly affected reliability for users of our free, Pro, Max, and Team services, especially during peak periods." The new agreement with Amazon is expected to enhance Anthropic's computing capabilities, with meaningful resources anticipated within the next three months and a total of nearly 1 gigawatt secured by the end of 2026.
