Amazon exec downplays new Fire Phone rumors: “No clear path that makes sense”

Recent reports suggested that Amazon was venturing into smartphone development once again, with plans to create a device utilizing Alexa as its operating system. According to sources cited by Reuters, this phone, referred to as 'Transformer,' aimed to encourage users to engage more with Amazon's AI and services. However, these plans may not come to fruition, as Amazon has not confirmed the information. In a conversation with the Financial Times, Panos Panay, Amazon's head of devices and services, clarified that launching a new smartphone is not currently on the company's agenda. He referenced Amazon's previous attempt to enter the smartphone market with the Fire Phone, which was discontinued after just a year due to disappointing sales. Panay addressed inquiries about the potential for an AI-centric smartphone, stating, "It's just not the goal. I know there's a lot of rumors out there." He emphasized that there is no definitive strategy guiding the development of a new phone, noting that there are various emerging technologies that require focus. While he acknowledged the complexity of the situation, he indicated that Amazon is not in a position where a new phone is a priority at this time.
