In a recent initiative to curb what it calls "tokenmaxxing," Amazon has decided to dismantle an internal leaderboard that monitored employee AI token usage. This action aims to prevent staff from engaging in tasks that do not effectively address real issues, simply to improve their ranking on the board. Dave Treadwell, a senior vice president at Amazon, urged employees earlier this week to focus on using AI meaningfully. He emphasized, "Please don't use AI just for the sake of using AI. Use it to solve customer problems, tackle business challenges, and drive innovation." This decision, initially reported by the Financial Times, reflects a broader shift among major corporations who are reassessing their AI expenditure amidst concerns over escalating costs that fail to deliver proportional returns. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that the leaderboard, named "KiroRank," has been formally discontinued. They clarified that the dashboard was an informal creation by employees and was never meant to encourage frivolous AI usage. The spokesperson further stated, "We're committed to AI adoption and sharing best practices to celebrate innovation and operational efficiency gains across the company. We are proud of how our teams are engaging with this technology." While Amazon does monitor AI token usage to manage costs, it does not endorse the practice of "tokenmaxxing," a trend in Silicon Valley where productivity is gauged by the volume of AI usage. This trend appears to be losing traction, as highlighted by Uber's COO Andrew Macdonald, who noted that their increased AI investments have not translated into expected productivity gains. Tokens serve as the basic units for large language models, breaking down words into numerical formats essential for AI chatbots and coding applications. The demand for token usage has surged significantly, particularly with the emergence of agentic AI, which can function with minimal human oversight for extended periods. In April, reports indicated that Amazon's retail division was closely monitoring the application of AI among engineers, including how often they utilize AI tools and the impact of these implementations on their work.
