Amazon has officially acknowledged recent layoffs within its cloud-computing division, known as AWS. This announcement, made by spokesperson Brad Glasser, has sparked discussions among employees as they seek to understand the specifics through internal communications. While the company has not disclosed the exact number of positions affected or which teams faced cuts, internal messages indicate that frontline support, training and certification teams, and the AWS Worldwide Specialist Organization may have been impacted. Glasser emphasized that this decision was made after a comprehensive evaluation of the organization's priorities. The spokesperson stated, "After a thorough review of our organization, our priorities, and what we need to focus on going forward, we've made the difficult business decision to eliminate some roles across particular teams in AWS." He reassured that these changes are essential as Amazon continues to invest and innovate for its customers. These layoffs come on the heels of comments from CEO Andy Jassy, who mentioned that advancements in AI could lead to a reduction in the corporate workforce over the coming years. However, Glasser clarified that the current layoffs are not primarily driven by AI considerations, noting that Amazon still has numerous job openings in strategic areas. Employees affected by the layoffs will receive pay and benefits for at least 60 days, plus eligibility for severance payments. The company has not yet provided details on the criteria for severance eligibility, leaving employees seeking further clarity on their circumstances.
