A clash is brewing between retail giant Amazon and innovative AI startup Perplexity over the extent of purchasing authority granted to AI agents. The $18 billion startup, known for its AI web browser Comet, announced on Tuesday that it has received a stern legal warning from Amazon. In a blog post titled 'Bullying is Not Innovation,' Perplexity disclosed that Amazon has demanded the company prevent Comet users from utilizing their AI assistants for shopping on its platform. This marks Amazon's initial legal action against an AI firm, raising significant concerns for online consumers. Perplexity argued that Amazon's stance obstructs customers from using their AI assistants effectively, stating, "Amazon should embrace this technology, as it simplifies shopping and increases customer satisfaction. Instead, they seem focused on advertising and influencing purchasing decisions through upsells and complicated offers." While a request for comments from Amazon was not immediately answered, spokesperson Lara Hendrickson elaborated to Bloomberg that third-party applications facilitating purchases from other retailers should operate transparently and honor service providers' choices regarding participation. Under the leadership of CEO Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity has quickly risen to prominence among AI startups, although its search products have encountered various legal hurdles. This story is still unfolding as both companies navigate the implications of this legal dispute.
