Amazon's latest round of layoffs could see 16,000 employees lose their jobs as early as next week

Amazon is reportedly set to lay off around 16,000 corporate employees as soon as next week. This significant move is part of a broader restructuring initiative aimed at streamlining management and realigning the tech giant's focus towards artificial intelligence. These anticipated job losses come on the heels of a previous round of layoffs in October 2025, during which approximately 14,000 white-collar positions were eliminated. According to sources from Business Insider and Reuters, if these layoffs proceed, the total number of corporate job losses will reach roughly 30,000 during this cycle. While this figure represents nearly 10% of Amazon's corporate workforce, it constitutes only a small fraction of the company's overall employee base of 1.5 million. Reports indicate that these layoffs are part of Amazon's efforts to simplify its operational structure. In statements made in October, the company attributed the cuts to advancements in AI and automation. However, CEO Andy Jassy later clarified that the layoffs are not driven by cost-cutting measures or fears of AI replacing jobs. Instead, he emphasized that they are about ensuring a cultural fit and aligning roles with the company's evolving expectations. “You end up with a lot more people than what you had before, and you end up with a lot more layers,” Jassy remarked during Amazon’s third-quarter earnings call. According to Reuters, departments likely to be affected include Amazon Web Services, retail, Prime Video, and the human resources sector, known internally as 'People Experience and Technology.' The full extent of the layoffs remains uncertain, as an Amazon spokesperson declined to provide additional comments. If these layoffs proceed, they would mark the largest workforce reduction in Amazon's 30-year history, surpassing the previous high of 27,000 employees laid off in 2022. In the previous round of job cuts, affected employees were informed that they would continue to receive their salaries for a period of 90 days, during which they could seek other employment opportunities, either within Amazon or externally. That grace period is set to expire on January 26.
