Amazon to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic as part of AI infrastructure deal

In a significant move to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities, Amazon has announced plans to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic, a startup focused on AI development. This new funding comes in addition to the $8 billion already invested in recent years. The partnership aims to bolster AI infrastructure, with Anthropic committing to spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies in the next decade. Anthropic's announcement highlights its commitment to utilizing AWS Trainium, Amazon's proprietary AI chips, to train and deploy its Claude AI models. The company has secured approximately 5 gigawatts of capacity for these operations. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasized the strides made in custom silicon technology, stating that this collaboration will provide the necessary infrastructure for clients eager to explore generative AI. As part of the investment agreement, Amazon will initially contribute $5 billion, with the potential for an additional $20 billion tied to specific commercial achievements. This investment is based on Anthropic's latest valuation of $380 billion. Anthropic also indicated plans to activate nearly 1 gigawatt of Trainium2 and Trainium3 capacity by year-end. In a competitive landscape where major tech firms are racing to expand their AI capabilities, Amazon revealed earlier this year that it intends to invest around $200 billion in capital expenditures, primarily for AI infrastructure. This latest investment comes just two months after Amazon's commitment of up to $50 billion to OpenAI, which is a direct competitor to Anthropic. Anthropic, which was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI team members, has seen a surge in demand for its Claude AI models. However, this rapid growth has put pressure on its infrastructure, impacting performance and reliability. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei noted the urgent need to expand capacity to meet user demand, stating that their collaboration with Amazon will support ongoing AI research and ensure steady service for their growing customer base. The company has made significant strides in the enterprise sector, achieving annualized revenue exceeding $30 billion. In 2023, Anthropic designated AWS as its primary cloud provider and training partner, while also forming partnerships with other tech giants like Microsoft and Google. Recently, Microsoft agreed to invest $5 billion in Anthropic, further solidifying the startup's position in the competitive AI market.
