OpenAI models could help power Alexa as part of Amazon investment deal

Amazon is in discussions to potentially integrate OpenAI's advanced AI models into its digital assistant, Alexa, as part of a broader investment initiative. Reports indicate that Amazon may invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI, a collaboration that could significantly elevate the capabilities of Alexa and other internal projects within the tech giant. Sources familiar with the negotiations, who wish to remain anonymous due to the confidential nature of the talks, suggest that the partnership might also involve OpenAI utilizing Amazon's AI chips and computing resources. While Amazon has chosen not to comment on the specifics, the news was first reported by The Information. The discussions between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are ongoing, with no final agreement reached yet. For Amazon, access to OpenAI's models could enhance its AI initiatives, which are vital across various sectors of the company. In addition to Alexa, Amazon has been developing its shopping chatbot, Rufus, which operates within its e-commerce app using a custom internal AI model for user inquiries. Last year, Amazon launched a redesigned version of Alexa aimed at competing with top-tier chatbots, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. The new Alexa+, described as 'model agnostic,' can utilize different AI models from various providers based on the task at hand. Reports indicate that Alexa+'s more complex queries are currently addressed by Anthropic's Claude model. Notably, Amazon holds an $8 billion investment in Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI. Amazon's top Alexa executive, Daniel Rausch, mentioned in a recent interview that the majority of queries are managed by its proprietary Nova models, with the company employing over 70 different AI models. Rausch emphasized a strong partnership with Anthropic and other model providers facilitated through its Bedrock service. Additionally, OpenAI has ties with Apple, particularly regarding its Siri voice assistant. Last month, Apple announced a collaboration with Google to incorporate its Gemini models into the upcoming upgraded version of Siri. According to insiders, OpenAI sees the partnership with Amazon as a more beneficial opportunity for expanding its enterprise outreach compared to its relationship with Apple, which could lead to more competition with OpenAI's new devices. Notably, OpenAI has been actively expanding into the device market, having acquired Jony Ive's AI device startup for approximately $6.4 billion last year.
