Amazon has entered into a significant multibillion-dollar agreement with Corning, aimed at bolstering its expanding network of data centers across the United States. This partnership, announced on Monday, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing artificial intelligence surge, with both companies positioned at the forefront of this technological revolution. The deal, which will be executed over several years, is expected to generate approximately 1,000 jobs at Corning's facilities in North Carolina. As the demand for high-speed connectivity skyrockets, Corning's optical fiber cables and networking technologies are becoming indispensable for AI infrastructure, facilitating rapid data transfer between data centers and the advanced hardware they support. An official statement highlighted the critical role of Amazon's data centers in powering services relied upon by millions daily. "Corning's fiber optics are a vital component of that infrastructure," the statement noted, emphasizing that these investments are crucial for bolstering the U.S. economy. In addition to the deal, Corning will expand its training program for fiber optic technicians in North Carolina, further contributing to the local job market. According to Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman, the company's investments in the state have already resulted in over 26,000 new jobs. Last year, Amazon pledged $10 billion towards the development of new data centers in North Carolina alone. For Corning, the surge in AI demand is revitalizing its 175-year-old legacy. As tech giants and AI research labs race to meet the increasing computational requirements, Corning's stock has seen impressive growth, having more than doubled this year and increased nearly sixfold since late 2023. In a related move, Nvidia has also committed up to $3.2 billion to Corning, facilitating the construction of three new advanced manufacturing plants dedicated to the chipmaker's needs. Earlier this year, Meta announced plans to invest up to $6 billion to support Corning's optical cable manufacturing facility in Hickory, North Carolina, which is projected to create around 1,000 additional jobs. While Corning is recognized for producing display glass for Apple’s iPhone, its optical communications sector remains its largest and fastest-growing segment. Having pioneered optical fiber technology in 1970, Corning has delivered millions of miles of cabling essential for interconnecting AI data centers operated by leading industry players. The Trump administration has urged major technology firms to localize as much of the AI supply chain as possible, and Corning's capabilities are well-aligned with this goal. Despite the majority of Corning's operations being international, CEO Wendell Weeks stated earlier this year that hyperscalers will soon become the company's largest customer. "This agreement with Amazon signifies a major achievement for Corning and American manufacturing," Weeks remarked in the press release, emphasizing its potential to strengthen the U.S. manufacturing landscape.
