Amazon to invest $25 billion more in Anthropic: here’s why it matters

Amazon has unveiled ambitious plans to deepen its partnership with AI firm Anthropic by making a staggering investment exceeding $25 billion aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure. This substantial commitment builds upon the existing $8 billion that Amazon had already allocated to Anthropic since the beginning of 2023. In a recent blog post, Anthropic outlined its intention to invest over $100 billion in Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies over the next decade. Additionally, the company has secured up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of computing power, essential for training and operating its Claude AI model. The collaboration will leverage Amazon’s custom chips, including the Graviton and Trainium series, with future enhancements such as Trainium 4 also in the pipeline. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, "Anthropic's commitment to utilize AWS Trainium for its large language models over the next ten years underscores the advancements we've achieved together in custom silicon, enabling us to provide the necessary technology and infrastructure for our customers engaged in generative AI." Currently, Anthropic disclosed that Amazon will inject $5 billion immediately, with the potential for an additional $20 billion investment contingent on achieving specific commercial milestones. By the end of this year, Anthropic aims to activate nearly 1 gigawatt of computing capacity, utilizing Amazon’s AI chips such as Trainium2 and Trainium3. The implications of this collaboration are significant. Anthropic reported a remarkable surge in its run-rate revenue, soaring to $30 billion, a substantial increase from approximately $9 billion at the close of 2025, driven by overwhelming demand from enterprises and developers. However, this rapid growth has placed considerable strain on its infrastructure, leading to potential performance slowdowns for users across various subscription plans. To address these challenges, Anthropic is aligning with tech giants like Amazon to scale its AI infrastructure. The expanded partnership is projected to provide Anthropic with enhanced computing power, with a total capacity nearing 1GW expected by year’s end. Additionally, the company has indicated that it is employing a diverse array of chips and hardware, ensuring that it does not depend solely on one type of technology. "We are constructing the infrastructure necessary to keep Claude at the forefront and reliably serve our expanding customer base," the company affirmed.
