In a recent communication to his team, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made headlines by addressing not only company matters but also taking a veiled shot at rival Mark Zuckerberg. The message, shared on Slack, criticized the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency while subtly referencing Zuckerberg's remarks about corporate masculinity. Altman emphasized OpenAI's commitment to remaining resilient against shifting cultural trends, stating, "We didn't start talking about masculine corporate energy when that was popular." This statement indirectly counters Zuckerberg's advocacy for a return to a more traditionally masculine corporate culture, which he discussed during his appearance on "The Joe Rogan Experience" last year. During that podcast, Zuckerberg expressed that while he values masculine energy in the workplace, he believed corporate culture had swung too far away from it. He noted that many women feel companies have become overly masculine, yet he argued that the response to this perception had gone too far in the opposite direction. "It's one thing to say we want to be welcoming and make a good environment for everyone," Zuckerberg stated. "It's another to basically say that masculinity is bad." Further in his memo, Altman pointed out that OpenAI has not succumbed to what he termed as 'wokeness' when it gained traction. Meta, Zuckerberg's company, did not respond to inquiries regarding Altman's comments. This rivalry is intensifying as both Altman and Zuckerberg compete fiercely for top AI talent. Reports indicate that Zuckerberg has made aggressive attempts to recruit OpenAI employees, offering staggering compensation packages that include signing bonuses reportedly as high as $100 million. Despite these offers, Altman noted with some relief that so far, none of his top talent have accepted. However, Zuckerberg has successfully lured away some key figures, including ChatGPT co-creator Shengjia Zhao, further escalating the competition between the two tech giants.
