Alphabet’s 100-year sterling bond raises new fears over debt-fuelled AI arms race

Alphabet’s 100-year sterling bond raises new fears over debt-fuelled AI arms race

In a significant financial maneuver, Alphabet has issued a rare 100-year sterling bond, signaling a surge in borrowing among tech giants as they race to enhance their AI and data center capabilities. This unprecedented bond marks Alphabet's first foray into sterling issuance and is part of a larger $20 billion multi-currency borrowing initiative. The bond, which has drawn remarkable interest, received nearly ten times the orders for its £1 billion ($1.37 billion) offering, with a coupon rate set at 120 basis points above 10-year gilts, as reported by Bloomberg. Bill Blain, CEO of Wind Shift Capital, commented that this deal highlights the unprecedented levels of debt being raised to fuel AI growth in both public and private sectors. Alphabet is anticipating capital expenditures of around $185 billion in the current year. Blain noted, "They clearly identified demand… that this was what U.K. insurance and pension funds wanted to cover their liabilities." However, as credit spreads remain historically narrow and the future of data center demand appears uncertain, Blain warns that this bond issuance reflects an overheated market surrounding AI investments. With major competitors like Oracle, Amazon, and Microsoft also ramping up their infrastructure investments, the total debt issuance among tech companies is projected to reach approximately $3 trillion over the next five years. Experts suggest that this 100-year bond diversifies Alphabet's sources of funding while appealing to investors looking for stability amidst market volatility. Tatjana Greil Castro, co-head of public markets at Muzinich & Co., emphasized that investing in such a long-term bond is a leap of faith in Alphabet's longevity. She remarked, "You do take a leap into that company being around to pay interest over the next 100 years. It is very rare... even governments don't really issue 100-year debt." Simon Prior, a fund manager at Premier Miton, noted that while the bond represents a diversification strategy, it also comes with risks. Buyers are locking in yields just above 6% amid a turbulent global political landscape, even as tech stocks reach all-time highs. Blain cautioned, "The sheer scale of the AI hyperscaler debt-fest reminds me so much of situations I've seen in the past, especially around a market that gets a theme and follows it to the extreme." As the landscape of corporate debt continues to evolve, the long-term implications of such a significant bond issuance remain to be seen, particularly as the tech industry faces ongoing changes and challenges.
