Rumbles within the Magnificent Seven

Recent fluctuations among the so-called Magnificent Seven stocks have captured the attention of investors. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, experienced a notable increase of 2.4% in its share price on Wednesday, pushing its market capitalization to an impressive $3.89 trillion. In contrast, Apple, known for its iconic iPhone, saw a decline of 0.8%, resulting in a market cap of $3.85 trillion. This marks the first occasion since 2019 that Alphabet has outpaced Apple in valuation, highlighting a significant shift in the tech landscape, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence. The race in AI has taken center stage, especially as Apple faces delays in the rollout of its upgraded Siri voice assistant, which is now expected in 2025 without a confirmed launch date. Meanwhile, Alphabet has been rapidly deploying innovative AI models and generators, attracting a growing user base and investor enthusiasm, making it the standout performer among major tech companies last year. In another development, Tesla and Nvidia are in the spotlight for their advancements in self-driving technology. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, recently unveiled Alpamayo, an AI reasoning model aimed at enhancing autonomous vehicle development, during the CES conference. While Tesla's CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the potential competitive pressure this could exert on Tesla, he projected that it would take several years for it to truly challenge Tesla’s dominance. U.S. stock markets experienced a slight pullback after a three-day rally, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both retreating. However, the Nasdaq Composite managed to advance. In Europe, the Stoxx 600 closed just below the flatline, although Germany's DAX saw a gain of 0.92%. In geopolitical news, Venezuela plans to continue shipping sanctioned oil to the U.S., as disclosed by sources close to the White House. This shipment follows an announcement by former President Donald Trump, marking just the initial phase of this agreement. Additionally, amidst ongoing negotiations, the Warner Bros. Discovery board has once again turned down Paramount’s acquisition bid, deeming it inferior to a deal with Netflix that is set to see the streaming giant acquire WBD’s studio and streaming sector for $72 billion. Lastly, Trump has indicated that he will prohibit dividends and stock buybacks for defense companies until they improve their military production timelines.
