In a significant legal resolution, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has agreed to a $24.5 million settlement in a lawsuit brought by former President Donald Trump. This legal action stemmed from the suspension of Trump's YouTube account following the events of January 6, 2021, when his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. As part of the settlement, $22 million will be directed by Trump to the Trust for the National Mall, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on the preservation and enhancement of the National Mall. This funding is set to support the development of the proposed White House State Ballroom, a project Trump has recently announced plans for. Additionally, the settlement, which was filed today in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, includes a payment of $2.5 million to resolve claims from other plaintiffs, including the American Conservative Union and several individuals associated with conservative media. Importantly, Alphabet has stated that it does not admit any wrongdoing as part of this settlement, and all parties involved agreed to dismiss the case. Google has refrained from making further comments on the matter beyond what is stated in the court documents. The suspension of Trump from major social media platforms followed the Capitol attack, which led to his impeachment by the House for incitement of insurrection. Earlier this year, Meta reached a similar agreement, paying a total of $25 million, while Elon Musk's platform, X, settled for $10 million. Reports indicate that Google aimed to keep its settlement amount lower than that of Meta, as noted by sources familiar with the negotiations.
