In a bold move that has captured investor attention, Allbirds has officially rebranded to Smartbird, marking its transition from footwear to artificial intelligence infrastructure. This strategic shift comes alongside the appointment of Nadia Carlsten as the new CEO, taking over from Joe Vernachio. Carlsten brings a wealth of experience from her previous role at the Danish Center for AI Innovation, known for its partnership with Nvidia and housing the powerful Gefion supercomputer. The announcement led to a remarkable 34% increase in shares on Wednesday, reflecting investor enthusiasm for the company’s new direction. This transformation follows Allbirds' surprising pivot announced in April, when the company revealed its plans to focus on AI compute infrastructure and hardware, which had initially seen its market cap soar sevenfold. Adding to its recent changes, Allbirds sold its footwear division to the American Exchange Group for $39 million just a month prior. The company joins a growing list of enterprises reorienting their business models towards AI, a trend ignited by the explosive popularity of ChatGPT in late 2022. Notably, the day after Allbirds’ rebranding, social media provider Myseum also shifted its focus to AI, demonstrating a wider trend on Wall Street where businesses are rapidly adapting to emerging technologies. In a similar vein, CoreWeave, an AI infrastructure firm that went public last year, originally began in crypto mining before successfully pivoting to AI.
