'Peak silliness': Here's what investing pros think of Allbirds' pivot from shoes to AI

Allbirds, the footwear brand famous for its eco-friendly sneakers, has recently made headlines by announcing a significant shift in its business strategy. The company plans to abandon its shoe line to focus on AI computing infrastructure, causing its stock to soar by over 800% in one day, only to experience a dramatic 30% drop the following session. In March, Allbirds sold its shoe business for $39 million, and it now aims to utilize a $50 million convertible financing facility to venture into the competitive AI infrastructure sector. While this market holds immense potential, established players like CoreWeave have encountered their own challenges, raising questions about Allbirds' timing and strategy. Experts are divided on this bold pivot. Shay Boloor, chief market strategist at Futurum, described the transition from selling wool sneakers to entering the AI space as one of the most audacious moves seen in recent times. Daniel Newman, CEO of Futurum, echoed this sentiment, labeling it “the most ridiculous pivot I've ever seen.” He pointed out that Allbirds' surge in stock price coincided with a retreat from more established AI real estate investment trusts (REITs) like CipherMining and TeraWulf. Skepticism is rife among financial analysts. Liz Ann Sonders, chief market strategist at Schwab Center for Financial Research, expressed doubts about the feasibility of such a drastic shift, noting that the firm seems to be utilizing its public status to latch onto a trending narrative rather than demonstrating solid business fundamentals. Mark Malek, investment chief at Siebert Financial, compared Allbirds' strategy to the dot-com bubble era, suggesting that companies predicting endless demand for AI resources may be courting disaster. He stated, "The burst will come." William Blair analysts took a conservative stance, informing clients that they would cease coverage of Allbirds following this bold AI pivot. They criticized the company’s strategy as a desperate gamble, highlighting that its valuation has skyrocketed to approximately $140 million from about $10 million, despite the uncertainty surrounding its new AI pursuits. The $50 million earmarked for the AI infrastructure shift is considered negligible in the broader context of a market where capital expenditure often reaches into the billions. As one research firm jokingly remarked, the timing of Allbirds' surge raises eyebrows, suggesting caution in such volatile market conditions. As Allbirds embarks on this ambitious new chapter, investors and analysts alike are watching closely to see whether this leap into AI will pay off or turn into a cautionary tale.
