Allbirds, once celebrated for its commitment to sustainability in footwear, is embarking on a significant transformation that marks a departure from its foundational environmental principles. Announced on Wednesday, the company is transitioning from its core focus on shoes to developing AI compute infrastructure, rebranding itself as NewBird AI. As part of this strategic pivot, Allbirds plans to acquire graphics processing units (GPUs) and evolve into a GPU-as-a-service provider. The company is also divesting its footwear assets and relinquishing its original name, suggesting that Allbirds-branded shoes may continue under different ownership. In a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Allbirds addressed concerns regarding its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. Shareholders are set to vote next month on proposed amendments, which include the removal of environmental commitments from the company’s charter and the revocation of its status as a public benefit corporation (PBC). PBCs are designed to promote public welfare while operating sustainably. Allbirds acknowledged that the new Electronics Infrastructure Business would shift focus away from environmental conservation. The SEC filing also highlighted potential risks tied to the proposed changes, including the loss of its PBC status, which mandates a commitment to public benefit and responsible operations. The company warned that abandoning this status could harm its reputation and negatively impact its ability to attract customers, employees, and partners. If approved, the amended charter would prioritize shareholder interests over environmental considerations. The move to AI is particularly noteworthy amid growing concerns about the ecological footprint of artificial intelligence and data centers. A recent investigation revealed that the surge in AI development is straining energy and water resources across the United States. Founded in 2015, Allbirds built its brand on sustainability, creating shoes from natural materials and earning its B Corp certification in 2016 for achieving high social and environmental impact standards. When it went public in 2021, Allbirds emphasized its mission to create better products through sustainable practices. In its latest efforts, the company introduced the “M0.0NSHOT Zero,” touted as the world's first net zero carbon shoe, made from carbon-negative wool sourced in New Zealand. However, critics have accused Allbirds of greenwashing, suggesting that its environmental claims may not reflect reality. While the latest SEC filing indicates a reduced emphasis on environmental issues, it remains unclear whether any sustainability principles will persist within the company’s future. Despite the concerns, the transition seems to have positively impacted shareholders, with Allbirds’ stock surging 582% at market close on Wednesday, reversing a prolonged decline.
