Review:Disclosure Dayis big on action, light on ideas

The summer blockbuster season is officially underway with the release of 'Disclosure Day', a much-anticipated film from acclaimed director Steven Spielberg, who returns to his roots in the alien-invasion genre. While the film may lack groundbreaking ideas typical of alien narratives, it compensates with its relentless pace and a standout performance by Emily Blunt that promises to keep audiences engaged. The story kicks off with a political thriller vibe reminiscent of classic films like 'The Parallax View'. As global tensions escalate, the world finds itself on the verge of a potential World War III. Within this backdrop, we meet Daniel (played by Josh O’Connor), a cybersecurity expert who has pilfered a piece of alien tech along with highly classified information from his employer, Wardex Corporation—an ultra-secret branch of the U.S. government led by Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth). In a dramatic turn, Scanlon takes Daniel's girlfriend, Jane (Eve Hewson), hostage to coerce him into surrendering. In a twist of fate, Daniel manages to outsmart them, escaping with Jane as Scanlon brands him a traitor. Meanwhile, we follow Margaret (Emily Blunt), a Kansas City meteorologist, who experiences an unusual encounter with a cardinal that seemingly unlocks her ability to understand and speak multiple languages, including Russian—a language she never learned.
