Alibaba to launch AI-powered glasses creating a Chinese rival to Meta

Alibaba has made a significant announcement, revealing its entry into the smart glasses market with the introduction of the Quark AI Glasses. This marks the company's first venture into this category and is set to launch in China by the end of 2025. Powered by Alibaba's own Qwen large language model and its advanced AI assistant, Quark, these glasses are positioned to rival Western technologies and other Chinese competitors. Alibaba is recognized as a leader in the artificial intelligence sector, actively developing new models that compete with those from companies like OpenAI. The Quark AI Glasses are part of a broader trend among tech companies, which view wearables—particularly smart glasses—as the next major advancement in computing, akin to the evolution of smartphones. Quark, the AI assistant, was released earlier this year and is currently available as an app in China. With features such as hands-free calling, music streaming, real-time language translation, and meeting transcription, Alibaba's glasses are designed to enhance user experience. Additionally, they come equipped with a built-in camera. The tech giant is entering the hardware arena to expand the reach of its app and services. This move puts Alibaba in direct competition not only with Meta's smart glasses, developed in partnership with Ray-Ban, but also with Xiaomi, which recently launched its own AI glasses. The Quark AI Glasses will enable users to utilize navigation services, make payments through Alipay, and shop on Taobao, Alibaba's popular e-commerce platform. While the company has yet to disclose further details regarding pricing or technical specifications, this launch signifies a bold step for Alibaba in the ever-evolving landscape of smart technology.
