Alibaba just revealed it’s behind a viral AI video model dominating leaderboards

A groundbreaking AI video model that has taken the global scene by storm is now confirmed to be a creation of Alibaba, the renowned Chinese technology leader. HappyHorse-1.0, which first emerged on the benchmarking platform Artificial Analysis around April 7, quickly rose to the top of the rankings for text-to-video and image-to-video generation without initially revealing its creator's identity. In a recent announcement via a newly established X account, Alibaba's ATH AI Innovation Unit disclosed that HappyHorse is still in development. This confirmation was later validated by Alibaba in a statement to CNBC. The model's sudden rise had led to widespread speculation about its origins, with many wondering if it was the work of a major tech company like Tencent or Alibaba, or an independent developer. Following the revelation, Alibaba's shares on the Hong Kong stock exchange experienced a notable increase, closing 2.12% higher. This followed a 6.75% surge earlier in the week, which was largely attributed to a broader upswing in technology stocks amid easing U.S.-Iran tensions and ongoing speculation about Alibaba’s involvement in the model's success. As the competition in China's AI landscape intensifies, Alibaba is making significant strides in expanding its AI portfolio. This includes their flagship Qwen large language model and chatbot application. While past AI initiatives from Alibaba have included video generation features, none have achieved the immediate acclaim or high rankings that HappyHorse-1.0 has garnered within such a short timeframe. The introduction of HappyHorse-1.0 may fortify Alibaba's standing in the video generation sector, where rivals have encountered challenges. OpenAI recently halted its Sora video generation platform, shifting focus toward coding tools and AGI development, as high computing costs impacted its strategy. Moreover, ByteDance faced its own hurdles, pausing the rollout of its Seedance 2.0 due to copyright issues with major Hollywood studios. Eddie Wu, Alibaba's CEO, has prioritized AI development, seeing it as a crucial element of the company’s extensive operations, which also encompass chip development and data centers. Alibaba has successfully integrated its AI models into various facets of its business, including e-commerce, advertising, and entertainment, and it appears that HappyHorse could follow suit.
