Alibaba's AI glasses to rival Meta go on sale for $500

Alibaba has officially launched its AI-powered smart glasses, the Quark AI Glasses, marking a significant move into the consumer AI sector. Released on Thursday, these innovative glasses are available in two versions: the S1 priced at approximately 3,799 Chinese yuan ($536) and the G1 at 1,899 yuan. The Quark AI Glasses are equipped with Alibaba's Qwen AI models, which serve as the company's answer to ChatGPT. These glasses also connect to the recently introduced Qwen app, allowing users to perform tasks through voice commands. The lenses function as screens, and an integrated camera enhances the user experience. Alibaba has highlighted that the primary distinction between the S1 and G1 models lies in their display capabilities. Users will enjoy features such as real-time translation, AI-generated meeting notes, and the ability to query the virtual assistant. Additionally, the glasses can capture images of products, providing instant pricing information through Taobao, Alibaba's popular shopping platform in China. As the competition heats up, Alibaba is positioning itself alongside tech giants like Meta, which recently launched the $799 Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses. Meta's product includes a built-in display and is controlled via gestures using a specialized wristband. Initially, Alibaba’s smart glasses will be available in China, where they will compete with local competitors like Xiaomi and the startup Xreal. The market for smart glasses, while currently modest, is projected to experience rapid growth, with shipments of AI glasses expected to surpass 10 million units by 2026, according to Omdia. This launch is a pivotal moment for Alibaba as it seeks to expand its footprint in the consumer AI market, building on recent successes such as the Qwen app, which garnered 10 million downloads within its first week of public beta. Furthermore, Alibaba's cloud computing sector is witnessing accelerated growth, affirming its status as a leader in China's AI landscape amidst fierce competition from Baidu and Tencent.
