Alibaba Cloud founder says early innovation doesn't need top-dollar hires: 'What happened in Silicon Valley is not the winning formula'

In the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence, the founder of Alibaba's cloud division, Wang Jian, asserts that genuine innovation doesn't hinge on attracting high-priced engineers but rather on assembling the right team capable of exploring the unknown. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, he expressed, "The only thing you need to do is to get the right person. Not really the expensive person because if it's a new business, if it's true innovation, that basically means talent." Wang, who established Alibaba Cloud in 2009, critiqued major American tech firms for their focus on existing technologies, stating, "We have a tremendous opportunity to look at technology nobody knows today." He emphasized that the prevailing practices in Silicon Valley may not be the ideal framework for success, remarking, "What happened in Silicon Valley is not the winning formula." His comments come in the wake of escalating battles among Big Tech companies for elite AI talent, reminiscent of sports teams vying for star players. Recently, Meta's acquisition of Scale's CEO, Alexandr Wang, for a considerable sum added fuel to this fire. Moreover, reports surfaced of OpenAI's Sam Altman revealing attempts by Meta to entice his top staff with lavish signing bonuses. Google also made headlines by investing $2.4 billion to recruit talent from the AI startup Windsurf. Wang Jian critiques this trend, suggesting that competing for the same pool of renowned talent can be counterproductive. He noted, "Whenever everybody knows that these are talents, it's better for you not to get it. It's really about the vision, you know, where you want to go." Furthermore, he addressed the landscape of competition among Chinese AI firms, highlighting that while the rivalry may not be excessively fierce, it fosters a dynamic ecosystem. "You can have the very fast iteration of technology because of this competition. I don't think it's brutal, but I think it's very healthy," he remarked. China's leading tech players are increasingly turning to open-source AI models, allowing widespread access to code and architecture for adaptation. Analysts have pointed out the emphasis on consolidation among Chinese firms to maintain competitiveness, with Tencent and Baidu integrating advanced AI models into their platforms. According to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, China is making remarkable strides in AI, with homegrown models like DeepSeek and Manus proving to be formidable contenders against US systems. Huang noted that the competition between the US and China in the AI chip sector is intensifying, with both nations closely matched.
