AI godfather Geoffrey Hinton says a girlfriend once broke up with him using a chatbot

Geoffrey Hinton, a leading figure in artificial intelligence, recently shared a personal story that highlights the growing influence of AI in human relationships. During an interview with the Financial Times, Hinton recounted how his girlfriend once used a chatbot to communicate her decision to end their relationship. She tasked the AI to articulate her grievances, describing him as 'a rat' in the process. Hinton humorously recalled, "She got the chatbot to explain how awful my behaviour was and gave it to me. I didn't think I had been a rat, so it didn't make me feel too bad. I met somebody I liked more, you know how it goes." This anecdote underscores a significant trend: artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into our daily communications. From drafting emails to resolving personal dilemmas, and even serving as a medium for breakups, AI is transforming the way we interact. In related research, a study from OpenAI and MIT Media Lab examined millions of interactions with ChatGPT. The findings suggested that extensive use of the chatbot might contribute to feelings of loneliness among certain users. The researchers noted that a minority of users generated a majority of the emotional cues in their conversations, indicating a complex relationship between AI usage and emotional well-being. OpenAI has also issued guidelines cautioning against using ChatGPT for sensitive relationship advice. They emphasized that when users inquire about serious personal issues, the AI should facilitate reflection rather than provide direct answers. This reflects a broader shift towards ensuring responsible interaction with AI, especially concerning high-stakes decisions in personal lives.
